MARCH

For March we will be discussing and comparing two books that deal with the same story: the epic poem Beowulf (anonymous) and the novel Grendel by John Gardner. To participate in the bookclub meeting you will need to have read both.

From Goodreads: “Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. ”

This will be a “choose your own adventure” edition of our bookclub. Choose the edition that you wish, whether it's translated or original. You can read the book in your preferred language however the discussion will be in English in small groups.
Several translations available for free at Project Gutenberg

In addition to Beowulf we will also be discussing the novel Grendel (1971) by John Gardner:

From Goodreads: “The first and most terrifying monster in English literature, from the great early epic Beowulf, tells his side of the story in a book William Gass called "one of the finest of our contemporary fictions.”

If you have difficulty finding the book at your local library you can request an interlibrary loan, ask at the library your options to use libris:

APRIL
In April we will be discussing your thoughts after having read the novella “Aura” (1962) by Carlos Fuentes.

"Aura" is a short novel by Mexican author Carlos Fuentes that blends elements of magic, the occult, and gothic romance to explore themes of youth, love, and the passage of time. The story follows Felipe Montero, a young historian who responds to a newspaper advertisement seemingly tailored for him, leading him to an ancient, desolate mansion inhabited by the enigmatic Consuelo Llorente and her beautiful niece, Aura. As Montero becomes immersed in his task of editing the memoirs of Consuelo's deceased husband, he finds himself drawn into a mysterious web of desire and identity that blurs the lines between the two women.
Fuentes's work is acclaimed for its mythic and symbolic depth, positioning "Aura" as a significant exploration of the interplay between the past and present, and the mystical forces that shape human experience.

May, Charles E.

You can read the book in your preferred language but the discussion will be in English in small groups. The book is available in different languages (however not in English) through interlibrary loan.
